Pas d'article sur un produit mais un petit billet sur le début de la nouvelle tournée du groupe qui passera, pour la France, par Clisson le 17 juin. Le premier concert à eu lieu hier et la set list a été dévoilée. Cette tournée est donc quasi entièrement consacrée aux albums Senjutsu et Somewhere in time.

   Le groupe ne pouvait pas reprendre les mêmes titres que lors de la tournée précédente, et c'est toujours un partie pris que de composer une set list orientée sur un thème, en l’occurrence le passé. On avait compris que l'album Somewhere in time serait à l'honneur, ce qui est assez étonnant l'année des 40 ans de Piece of mind. Mais pourquoi pas. C'est un album qui a été décrié lors de sa sortie pour ses parties de claviers mais qui a depuis retrouvé ses fans grâce à d'excellents titres.

Venons donc à cette set list qui figure sur le site du groupe, les nombreuses videos sur you tube et donc des visuels ont été diffusés sur Facebook en fin de journée hier: Il y aura donc 5 titres de Somewhere in time dont, pour la première fois en live Alexander the great. A noter que le show débute par Caught somewhere in time, single très sympa mais peu connu des non fan. Je pense notamment aux show qui seront donnés lors des festivals.

   Viennent ensuite 1 titre d'Iron Maiden, 1 titre de The number of the beast, 1 titre de Piece of mind, 1 titre de Seventh son of a seventh son et 1 titre de Fear of the dark. On peut noter, et je m'en plains personnellement, l'absence de Powerslave dans ce retour vers le passé.

   Tous les autres titres, soit 5, seront issus de Senjutsu. Et là je note ce qui est pour moi le plus gros écueil de ce show: Que vient faire Death of the Celts dans cette set list ?

   Ce titre est très long et c'est pour moi le plus faible de Senjutsu. Pourquoi ne pas l'avoir remplacé par deux titres courts et directs, tels Aces high ou même un titre de Killers puisque lui aussi est oublié. Nous aurions eu un réel mixte entre passé et présent. Un hommage aux premiers albums et une découverte live pour quelques titres de Senjustu, comme Hell on earth.

   A part le point faible de Death of the Celts, je suis impatient de découvrir les titres live, certains jamais joués et d'autres joués seulement durant la tournée initiale de Somewhere in time. D'autant plus que les effets visuels ont l'air sympas, ainsi que les personnages animés sur scène. Rendez-vous le 17 juin à Clisson pour vivre cela !

   No article about a product but a small post about the start of the new tour of the band which will be, for France, by Clisson on June 17. The first concert took place yesterday and the set list was unveiled. This tour is almost entirely devoted to the albums Senjutsu and Somewhere in time.

   The band could not repeat the same tracks as during the previous tour, and it is always a part taken to compose a set list oriented on a theme, in this case the past. We understood that the album Somewhere in time would be in the spotlight, which is quite surprising the year of the 40 years of Piece of mind. But why not. It is an album that was decried during its release for its parts of keyboards but that has since found its fans thanks to excellent tracks.

   So let’s come to this set list that appears on the site of the band, the many videos on you tube and therefore visuals were broadcast on Facebook at the end of the day yesterday: There will be 5 tracks of Somewhere in time including, for the first time live Alexander the great. Note that the show starts with Caught somewhere in time, a very nice single but little known by non fans. I am thinking in particular of the shows that will be given at the festivals.   

   Next comes 1 Iron Maiden title, 1 The number of the beast title, 1 Piece of mind title, 1 Seventh son of a seventh son and 1 Fear of the dark title. We can note, and I personally complain, the absence of Powerslave in this return to the past.

   All other titles, 5, will come from Senjutsu. And here I note what is for me the biggest pitfall of this show: What comes to do Death of the Celts in this set list ?

   This title is very long and it is for me the weakest of Senjutsu. Why not replace it with two short and direct titles, such as Aces high or even a Killers title since he too is forgotten. We would have had a real mix between past and present. A tribute to the first albums and a live discovery for some Senjustu titles, like Hell on earth.

   Apart from the weakness of Death of the Celts, I can’t wait to discover the live tracks, some never played and others played only during the initial tour of Somewhere in time. Especially since the visual effects look nice, as well as the animated characters on stage. See you on June 17 in Clisson to experience this!

   J'ai retrouvé deux CD des First ten years qui trainaient en dehors du classement de mes CD et, faute de retrouver un article sur le sujet, j'ai décidé d'en écrire un. Pour tous les tirages des First ten years datent de 1990. C'est normal car effectivement les vinyles ont été vendus à partir du 12 février 1990, de même que les tirages CD. Ces éditions sont faciles à identifier car ils possèdent un voucher dedans, une sorte de bon d'échange pour obtenir gratuitement une boite afin de les ranger. Mais beaucoup ne possèdent plus ce voucher, car soit ils ont été perdus, soit ils ont été échangés justement !

   I found two CDs of the First ten years that were hanging out of the classification of my CDs and, for lack of finding an article on the subject, I decided to write one. For all the First ten years prints date from 1990. This is normal because vinyl was sold from February 12, 1990, as well as CD prints. These editions are easy to identify because they have a voucher in them, a kind of voucher to get a free box to store them. But many no longer have this voucher, because either they were lost or they were exchanged precisely !

   C'est mon cas car environ 50% de mes CD n'ont plus le voucher. Et naturellement, avec ou sans voucher, j'ai toujours considéré que ces CD dataient tous de 1990. C'est une erreur car certains datent de 1995 en fait ! Pourquoi ?

   This is my case because about 50% of my CDs no longer have the voucher. And naturally, with or without voucher, I always considered that these CDs all date from 1990. This is a mistake because some date back to 1995! Why ?

   Dans mes habitudes de collectionneurs j'ai celle de regarder tout: la pochette, le label, ma matrice, le CD, les logos, les inserts, es couleurs et même les stickers. Tous ces éléments contiennent souvent un indice qui permet de dater un tirage et donc de découvrir une partie de l'histoire du groupe. Pour cet article c'est l'IFPI qui va nous aider. Ce code, qui est gravé sur le CD, indiquer le nom de la société qui a fabriqué celui-ci. Il existe deux type de IFPI: un premier gravé sur le plastique, au centre, et un second imbriqué dans le cercle extérieur contenant la matrix. Pour simplifier un identifié l'usine de gravage et l'autre le master utilisé. C'est le premier qui ici nous intéresse.

   In my collecting habits I have the habit of looking at everything: the cover, the label, my matrix, the CD, the logos, the inserts, the colors and even the stickers. All these elements often contain a clue that allows to date a print and thus to discover part of the history of the group. For this section, the IFPI will help us. This code, which is engraved on the CD, indicate the name of the company that manufactured it. There are two types of IFPI: one engraved on the plastic in the centre and a second nested in the outer circle containing the matrix. To simplify one identified the burning plant and the other the master used. This is the first one that interests us here.

   J'ai fait express de mettre les deux CD en contiguë afin de monter que visuellement il n'y a aucune différence. Ni sur le feuillet, ni sur le dos d'ailleurs. Voici ce qui fait la différence. Sur le CD de droite on remarque un IFPI qui est 1404:

   Cet IFPI 1404 correspond à l'usine de EMI Swindon. On trouve cette information sur différents sites répertoriant ces IFPI. Et comme on peut le voir sur la photo la matrix est aussi EMI Swindon. Nous avons notre information mais pas la plus importante: depuis quand y-a-t-il des IFPI sur les CD ? Là aussi plusieurs sites évoquent ce point, notamment Discogs qui indique la période de septembre 1994 comme début de l'implantation des IFPI sur les CD pour lutter contre le piratage. On pouvait ainsi identifier visuellement un vrai CD d'un faux. Ce qui n'est plus vrai aujourd'hui car les Russes arrivent à falsifier ces IFPI. Mais revenons en septembre 1994. Si depuis fin 1994 tous les CD ont été fabriqués avec un IFPI, les tirages des First ten years possédant un IFPI ne peut donc pas dater de 1990. C'est d'une logique implacable et cela démontre l'existence d'un second tirage pour les CD.

   This IFPI 1404 corresponds to the EMI Swindon plant. This information can be found on various sites listing these IFPI. And as you can see in the picture the matrix is also EMI Swindon. We have our information but not the most important: since when are there IFIs on CDs? Here again, several sites mention this point, notably Discogs which indicates the period of September 1994 as the beginning of the implementation of IFPI on CDs to fight piracy. We could visually identify a real CD from a fake one. This is no longer true today because the Russians manage to falsify these IFIs. But let’s go back to September 1994. If since the end of 1994 all CDs have been manufactured with an IFPI, the prints of First ten years with an IFPI cannot therefore date from 1990. It is an implacable logic and it shows the existence of a second edition for CDs.

   Mais avant de comprendre pourquoi, il convient juste de revenir sur l'identification. Bien entendu il y a l'IFPI mais sur la photo de présentation de cet article on peut voir deux points intéressants. Le premier est le sticker rond sur le tirage de Flight of icarus. Ce sticker indiquait la présence du voucher dans le CD. Cela prouve que le boitier contenait un CD du premier tirage de 1990. Je mets contenait car il faut quand même vérifier l'absence de IFPI, à cause des échanges de CD. J'en parle souvent mais ayez toujours cela en tête. A part un tirage neuf et scellé, il y a toujours un risque qu'une partie de votre produit viennent d'un autre tirage. Cela est aussi valable pour les vinyles avec les échanges disque/pochette. De même la présence d'un voucher n'est pas un indice, car là aussi il peut avoir été échangé de boitier. Prenez toujours le temps de tout analyser. Le second point est l'insert EMI présent dans le second  tirage de Flight of icarus. Là aussi il peut venir d'un autre CD. Mais en regardant les titres décrits dessus on peut noter qu'ils datent entre 1991 et 1993 (Dive Dive Dive de Bruce Dickinson en 1991, Dezhumaniser de Black Sabbath en 1992 et Hocus pocus de Focus en 1993). En tout cas cet insert ne pouvait pas se trouver dans un tirage initial de 1990.

   But before we understand why, we just need to go back to identification. Of course there is the IFPI but on the photo of presentation of this article we can see two interesting points. The first is the round sticker on the Flight of icarus print. This sticker indicated the presence of the voucher in the CD. This proves that the case contained a CD of the first edition of 1990. I put in because we still have to check the absence of IFPI, because of the CD exchanges. I often talk about it but always have this in mind. Apart from a new and sealed print, there is always a risk that part of your product will come from another print run. This also applies to vinyls with disc/sleeve exchanges. Also the presence of a voucher is not a clue, because there too it can have been exchanged from case. Always take the time to analyze everything. The second point is the EMI insert present in the second edition of Flight of icarus. There also it can come from another CD. But looking at the titles described above we can notice that they date from 1991 to 1993 (Bruce Dickinson’s Dive Dive in 1991, Dezhumaniser of Black Sabbath in 1992 and Hocus pocus of Focus in 1993). In any case this insert could not have been in an initial print run of 1990.

   Maintenant il reste à comprendre l'intérêt d'un second tirage. Les First ten years ont été édités pour célébrer les 10 première années discographiques du groupe. Cela n'aurait pas eu de sens de les revendre en 1995. Sauf si une opération spéciale survenait alors. Et si cette opération avait été pour EMI la sortie de The X factor ? En effet à cet occasion EMI à mis en vente une série de double CD contenant les albums précédents et les singles sur un CD bonus. Singles identiques à ceux figurant sur les CD des First ten years. Quelle belle occasion pour alors vendre un peu plus de produit que de rééditer les 10 CD des first ten years ? Bien entendu je n'ai pa sce souvenir et je n'ai aucune documentation pour le prouver. C'est juste une hypothèse. Mais la réalité est bien qu'EMI a remis en vente, en 1995 ou plus tard, des CD des First ten years. Pour ma part j'indique 1995 comme date de mise en vente.

   Now it remains to understand the interest of a second draw. The First ten years were published to celebrate the first 10 years of the band. It would have made no sense to resell them in 1995. Unless a special operation occurred. What if this operation was for EMI the release of The X factor ? Indeed on this occasion EMI put on sale a series of double CDs containing previous albums and singles on a bonus CD. Singles identical to those appearing on the CDs of First ten years. What a great opportunity to then sell a little more product than to republish the 10 CDs of the first ten years? Of course, I don’t remember and I don’t have any documentation to prove it. It’s just an assumption. But the reality is that EMI put back on sale, in 1995 or later, CDs of the First ten years. For my part, I indicate 1995 as the date of sale.

   Ce que j'ai écrit pour Flight of icarus et aussi valable pour Can I play with madness. Pour les First ten years je possède environ 50% de complet (1er et 2ème tirage) et le reste avec un manque. C'est assez compliqué de trouver les manques car il faut avoir accès au dos du CD. Je vous invite donc à vérifier votre collection, au risque d'avoir quelques surprises. Et à appliquer ce principe des IFPI à tous vos CD afin de voir s'ils sont d'avant ou d'après septembre 1994. Cela peut s'avérer intéressant pour des retirages des albums. Bien entendu il y aura toujours des exceptions ou des variantes. Cela restera un cadre général qu'il faudra compléter avec vos autres observations.

It’s quite complicated to find the gaps because you have to have access to the back of the CD. I invite you to check your collection, at the risk of having some surprises. And to apply this IFPI principle to all your CDs to see if they are before or after September 1994. This can be interesting for album releases. Of course there will always be exceptions or variations. That will remain a general framework that will have to be complemented by your other comments.
